Emmitt Smith is a three time Super Bowl champion and the NFL's all time rushing leader, a record formerly held by his childhood hero Walter Payton. Smith surpassed Payton on October 27, 2002 against the Seattle Seahawks at Texas Stadium. He is the only running back to ever have won a Super Bowl championship, the NFL Most Valuable Player award, the NFL rushing crown, and the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award all in the same season (1993). Emmitt Smith is one of four running backs who led the NFL in rushing three or more consecutive seasons. Emmitt was the first NFL rushing champion to win the Super Bowl the same season and its only been done once by one other running back Terrell Davis in 1998, Emmitt did it three times 1992, 1993, and 1995. Emmitt Smith is one of the three "Triplets", along with Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin that highlighted the Dallas Cowboys' offense during the 1990s.

Tony Dorsett was the first player to win the college football championship one year, then win the Super Bowl the next, when the Cowboys beat the Denver Broncos 27-10 to win Super Bowl XII. Dorsett made the Pro Bowl 4 times during his career (1978, 1981-1983) and rushed for over 1,000 yards in 8 of his first 9 seasons. The only season that he didn't reach the 1,000 rushing yards milestone was the strike shortened season of 1982(which had only 9 games), where he led the NFC in rushing with 745 yards. In 1999, he was ranked number 53 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Football Players.
